Substitute was originally recorded by “The Righteous Brothers.” Released as a single in 1975, it went nowhere. The song was revived in 1977 by “Clout,” a 5-member, originally all-girl band from South Africa. Clout’s new arrangement of the song reached number 1 in South Africa, New Zealand, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Denmark and Belgium. It also made number 2 in the UK behind You’re The One That I Want by “John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Later in their career, the group included some male musicians who had played as session musicians on Substitute.” In Europe Clout scored more Top 10 singles including Save Me, You’ve Got All of Me and Under Fire. They split up in 1981, shortly after the release of their last major single, a re-arrangement of the Hall & Oates song Portable Radio.
Norwegian singer-songwriter “Sigrid” began playing piano when she was 7 and started singing at age 13. She released her debut single, Sun, which received airplay on Norwegian radio stations. The 26 year old has released two studio albums, Sucker Punch (2019) and How to Let Go (2022), both of which charted in Norway and the United Kingdom. Lido Shuffle was written by “Boz Scaggs” and “David Paich” and first appeared on the 1976 “Boz Scaggs” album Silk Degrees. The song was subsequently released as a single in 1977. Released as the album’s fourth single, Lido Shuffle reached number 11 in the US and 13 on the UK Singles Chart. In Australia it spent three weeks at number 2 as a double A-side hit with What Can I Say. Members of the backup band on Lido Shuffle included “David Paich,” “Jeff Porcaro” and “David Hungate” who would soon go on to form “Toto.”
He was the lead singer for “The Babys” in the 70’s and for Bad English in the 80’s. As a solo artist, “John Waite” has released ten studio albums and is best known for the 1984 hit single Missing You, which reached the Top 10 in the UK and number 1 in the US. This week in 1991 Michael Jackson’s Black or White music video debuted on various music channels. It landed Michael in hot water with some viewers who complained about his excessive crotch-grabbing and gratuitous displays of violence. The controversy only made the clip more popular and it became the most requested and most played video on MTV.
Billy Idol’s new EP, The Cage, was released in September and the 66 year old appears to be full of energy and at the top of his game as already evidenced by the EP’s title track. Dan McCafferty, the former lead singer of Scottish hard rock band “Nazareth,” has died aged 76. McCafferty co-founded Nazareth in 1968. The group’s best known album, Hair Of The Dog, their sixth album, was released in 1975 and included the rock classic Love Hurts which topped the charts in Canada, South Africa and The Netherlands.
Norwegian band “a-ha” formed in 1982. They achieved their biggest success with their debut album Hunting High and Low in 1985 which yielded two international number-one singles: Take On Me and The Sun Always Shines on T.V. More chart topping singles followed in their native Norway with reasonable success elsewhere, particularly in Europe. True North, their eleventh studio album, has just been released and the single, I’m In, is new this week on RadiJohan.
