As Night Follows Day

“American Authors” are an American rock band whose band members met while attending “Berklee College of Music” in 2006. They spent their first years in Boston recording and performing music under the name “The Blue Pages.” They changed their name to “American Authors” in 2012. In 2013 they released Best Day of My Life, their most successful single to date. It charted in many countries and, among other things, was featured in a “Hyundai” television advertisement in the United Kingdom, an advertisement in South Africa for “Castle Lager,” and a “Telecom” advertisement in New Zealand.

Ten years after Best Day of My Life American Authors have released their fourth album, “Best Night of My Life,” the album’s title track, which nicely compliments the band’s signature song, is new this week on RadiJohan.

This Birdy Can Really Sing

“Birdy” has released a new single called Raincatchers. The song is the first preview of the English singer-songwriter’s upcoming fifth studio album, Portraits, which is due for release in July.

Jasmine van den Bogaerde (Birdy) learned to play the piano at the age of seven, and began writing her own music when she was eight. She won the music competition “Open Mic UK” in 2008 at the age of 12. The stage name “Birdy” comes from the nickname her parents gave her as a baby because she opened her mouth like a little bird when being fed.

Birdy’s Raincatchers is new this week on RadiJohan.

Do Not Despise Small beginnings

This week in 1977 Jim Steinman’s play Neverland, a futuristic rock version of Peter Pan opened at the Kennedy Center for the performing arts in Washington, DC. It’s run lasted only six days. However, just five months later, three of the songs Steinman wrote for the production, All Revved Up With No Place to Go, Bat Out of Hell and Heaven Can Wait, appeared on Meat Loaf’s album Bat Out Of Hell.

Bat Out of Hell was initially rejected by many record companies but today it is still one of the 10 best-selling albums of all time.

A Symptom of Being Human

“Shinedown” are an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 2001. They have released seven studio albums to date, including their latest, Planet Zero. They are no strangers to success and hold the record of most number 1’s in the 40 year history of the “Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs Chart.”

Shinedown’s lead singer, Brent Smith, believes their latest single, A Symptom of Being Human, to be the most important song off the Planet Zero album.

“A Symptom Of Being Human is a deep breath in the face of an ever-changing world. Everyone’s story is different. As human beings, we are all unique, and that’s what makes us individuals. We will all experience highs, and lows in our lifetime. We will all be put to the test, and the challenges of everyday life. So embrace it, don’t run away from it. Live every moment to the fullest, and don’t worry… It’s all just a symptom of being human.”

Last in Line Brings Rock Off The Top Shelf

“Last in Line” are a British rock band formed in 2012 by former members of the original lineup of “Dio” after the death of singer Ronnie James Dio in 2010. The band’s name comes from the 1984 Dio album The Last in Line. Guitarist Vivian Campbell, who also plays with Def Leppard, explained how Last in Line likes to record their music:

“With Last in Line, just as we did with Dio, we cut the basic tracks live. “It’s important for us to capture the energy of the syncopation of playing together in real time – much like the energy of a live show. This record represents the best of both worlds: the spirit of an energetic band performance, and the more reflective and nuanced qualities of our individual performances, too.”

Ghost Town is the first single released from Last in Line’s new album Jericho.Lead singer Andrew Freeman commented:

The song for me describes breaking a cycle from different perspectives. On a personal level it could be family, career or life expectations, putting a person in an unwanted or unwelcome space. On a grander scale it addresses government expectations. Nonsensical, unethical ideas and laws that become the norm, while turning a blind eye to larger problems.”

Ghost Town by “Last in Line” is new this week on RadiJohan.

From Scum to Pussycat

Dutch band “Pussycat” was formed in 1973 by three sisters. Prior to forming the band the three sisters all worked as telephone operators, while three of the four male band members were in a band called “Scum.” In 1975/1976 Pussycat scored a big world-wide hit with Mississippi.

The song, written in 1969 by the sisters’ guitar teacher, was inspired by the “Bee Gees” song Massachusetts. By December 1975 Mississippi topped the chart in the Netherlands. Its international success came in 1976, when it reached number one in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and a number of others.
