Eye of The Tiger

On this day in 1982 American rock band Survivor topped the chart in the US with “Eye of The Tiger. The song was commissioned by actor writer and director Sylvester Stallone for the theme for the movie Rocky III after Queen denied him permission to use “Another One Bites the Dust”. Eye of The tiger was nominated for the 1982 Academy Award for Best Original Song and would become Survivor’s biggest hit spending six consecutive weeks at number 1 in the US while it also topped the chart in numerous other countries.

Grease was the Word

On this day in 1978 The Grease soundtrack hit number 1 in the USA. Despite being an American film about American teens rebelling against the American culture of the 1950s, the album was also a huge success in the UK where all of the singles except for Greased Lightning peaked in the Top 10 of the pop chart, with “You’re the One That I Want” dominating the number 1 spot for a record-breaking nine weeks, some months before the film had even been released.

Gilbert O’Sullivan is back, “naturally” but not “alone.”

Arguably one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, Ireland’s Gilbert O’ Sullivan, who achieved his most significant success during the early 1970s with hits including “Alone Again (Naturally)”, “Clair”, and “Get Down” returns with a brand new album called “Driven.” It’s his 20th studio album, recorded with a full band and featuring a mix of ballads and upbeat songs. The album’s first single, “Take Love”, a duet with KT Tunstall, is new this week on RadiJohan.

RadiJohan is three years old!

RadiJohan started broadcasting on the internet on 26 July 2019. To mark our third birthday on 26 July 2022 we played every song that made it to number one on the RadiJohan Top 10 during these three years. You’ll find a list of the songs here!

The Return of Chicago

Formed in 1967 and initially called “The Big Thing” they played top 40 hits in nightclubs. While gaining some success as a cover band, the group began working on original songs. In 1968 they changed their name to the “Chicago Transit Authority” and shortened that to “Chicago” in 1969. The self-described “rock and roll band with horns” gradually moved to a predominantly softer sound. Chicago is one of the longest-running and one of the best selling groups of all time. Their 38th studio album has just been released and the single “If This Is Goodbye” is new this week on RadiJohan.

New Order

New Order formed in 1980 after the demise of Joy Division, following the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. Prior to his death, the members of Joy Division had agreed not to continue under the Joy Division name should any one member leave. In 1983 New Order released “Blue Monday” as a 12-inch single. Clocking in at 7:29 it made the top 10 in many countries. In New Zealand, it peaked at number 2 and spent 74 weeks (spread across three calendar years) in the top 50, while being the number one song in the 1983 year end top 100 and the number 8 song in the 1984 year end chart.

Joy Division

Joy Division were an English band formed in 1976 and, arguably, one of the greatest bands to come out of Manchester. Their career was however tragically cut short when their vocalist, Ian Curtis, took his own life on 18 May 1980. He had suffered from depression and had lived with severe epilepsy for some time. His death came just before the release of Joy Division’s classic single Love Will Tear Us Apart which would go on to top the singles chart in New Zealand.

Visions of Atlantis

Visions of Atlantis are an Austrian metal band that have been on the scene for 22 years. They are possibly the only band in existence whose drummer is the sole remaining original member. With  many musicians coming and going over the years the band have gone through plenty of changes but, through the changes, have always retained the dual male/female lead. In May the band released their 8th album “Pirates” which has received many positive reviews. The single “Melancholy Angel” has been the number one song on the RadiJohan Top 10 for the past three weeks. If you haven’t heard Visions of Atlantis……. you really need to press play below now!

Doctor Doctor, Give Me The News

On this day in 1979 Robert Palmer released “Bad Case of Loving You.” From his album “Secrets” it became his biggest hit up to that time, reaching number 14 in the US Hot 100, number 2 in The Netherlands and number 1 in Canada. The song was also nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the 22nd Annual Grammy Awards.
