A Norwegian First

This week in 1985 “a-ha” went to number 1 on the USA singles chart with “Take On Me,” making them the first Norwegian band to top the chart in the USA. The song reached number 1 in 27 countries and remained on top of the Eurochart Hot 100 for nine weeks.

The video for “Take On Me” featured the band in a pencil-sketch animation method called “Rotoscoping” combined with live action and won six awards at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards.

Norwegian band “a-ha” formed in 1982. They achieved their biggest success with their debut album Hunting High and Low in 1985 which yielded two international number-one singles: Take On Me and The Sun Always Shines on T.V. More chart topping singles followed in their native Norway with reasonable success elsewhere, particularly in Europe. True North, their eleventh studio album, has just been released and the single, I’m In, is new this week on RadiJohan.
