“New” Queen

Queen have released a previously unreleased song with the legendary Freddie Mercury on lead vocals. Face It Alone was recorded during the sessions for Queen’s 1989 album The Miracle. The track had been forgotten about but was rediscovered when the band returned to the sessions as part of a reissue box-set for the album due to be released in November. Guitarist Brian May said that they found the “little gem” kind of hiding in plain sight. He explained:

“We looked at it many times and thought, oh no, we can’t really rescue that. But in fact, we went in there again and our wonderful engineering team went, ‘OK, we can do this and this.’ It’s like kind of stitching bits together. But it’s beautiful, it’s touching.”

The presence of Freddie is without doubt the song’s main attraction. Face It Alone is new this week on Radijohan.

The Wiz

This week in 1978 the movie version of The Wiz, which debuted as a Broadway stage production in 1975, hit theaters. The re-imagining of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz featured an all-black cast including Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. The movie marked Michael Jackson’s acting debut. A special single edit of A Brand new day (Everybody Rejoice), one of the songs from The Wiz, peaked at number one on the charts in Belgium and The Netherlands.

New music from Queensrÿche

“Queensrÿche” have released their new album Digital Noise Alliance. Outside of the Hard Rock/Heavy Metal genre the American band, formed in 1980, are no doubt best remembered for their 1990 hit ballad Silent Lucidity. There’s a ballad on the new album too. Queensrÿche states:

The ballad of the album, ‘Forest’ embodies the sorrow of losing a loved one, trying to cope with such a profound loss, while occasionally feeling that person’s presence around you and asking for a sign.  It is a topic very relatable to people, as we will all at some point experience the great loss of a parent, child, sibling, spouse, or dear friend.

Queensrÿche’s Forest is new this week on RadiJohan.

KT Tunstall

Scottish singer-songwriter “KT Tunstall” has recently released her seventh studio album Nut. It’s the third album of a trilogy which explores the Body, Soul, and Mind. The album’s first single, Private Eyes, recounts a surreal celebrity encounter at a party early in Tunstall’s career.

Early on after my big success, I would dip my toe into accepting invites to random parties. At one party in a little club in Soho, London, a beautiful actress – who I didn’t know personally – in a big puffball gown, grabbed my hand and pulled me down the stairs into the basement kitchen in a panic. She was terrified of the paparazzi stalking her outside – she couldn’t face them,” Tunstall shares. “Mascara was running down her face as she had a meltdown on the floor. I had to break it to her, there was no door down here; the only way out was back up. But I remember through my own boozy haze how tragic it seemed that this person had so craved a life that had now felt like a prison. Beautiful eyes that didn’t want everyone looking into them.

Private Eyes is new this week on RadiJohan.

The Outfield

“The Outfield” were an English rock band based in London, England.  The band achieved success in the mid-1980s and are best remembered for their hit single Your Love. The band’s lineup consisted of guitarist John Spinks, vocalist and bass player Tony Lewis, and drummer Alan Jackman. They had the unusual experience for a British band enjoying commercial success in the US, but not in their homeland. Their debut album Play Deep made the top 10 on the US album chart in 1985 and, although further notable releases followed, it would be their most successful.
