The Night Chicago Died

The Night Chicago Died by “Paper Lace was their follow-up to Billy Don’t Be a Hero and hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 this week in 1974. It also topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand. The song tells a story about the notorious gangster Al Capone and his men having a shootout out with the police. There has been plenty of debate as to whether or not the story is true. However the song’s co-writer, Mitch Murray, has stated that the song was a work of fiction.

  1. Best song in the night Clubs back in the day…. everyone knew how to sing it and danced to it at least twice a night.

  2. Considering what gets played in clubs these days it makes some of us wonder about the devolution of what passes for music and fun.

    1. It was one of the most memorable songs from 1974 and 1974 was arguably one of the greatest years in music.
