“Promises” was a Canadian band formed in 1978. The Three band members were siblings. In 1979 their single “Baby It’s You” became a smash hit around the world, particularly in Europe but also in Australia where it reached number 2, and New Zealand where it topped the chart for five weeks. Legendary Guitarist Jeff Beck Dead at 78

British guitarist Jeff Beck has passed away at the age of 78. His family said in a statement that he passed away “after suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis.”

Jeff Beck initially played in a band called “The Tridents” but became known to the general public in 1965 when he replaced Eric Clapton in “The Yardbirds.” Although he remained in The Yardbirds for only 20 months, the band recorded most of their Top 40 hits while he was in the band, including “Over Under Sideways Down,” “Heart Full of Soul” and “Shapes Of Things.”

The guitar virtuoso went on to form “The Jeff Beck Group” and recorded “Truth,” one of rock’s great debut albums. Despite a constantly changing lineup the group’s unique approach to blues and rock had a lasting impact on popular music. In 1975, Jeff went solo, recording his first album “Blow By Blow” with “The Beatles” producer George Martin. The record went on to chart in the Top 10 in the US.

Jeff Beck has won eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, once with “The Yardbirds” in 1992 and once as a solo artist in 2009. In 2015 Beck was ranked fifth in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list. Many would consider him the greatest of all time.

An Introduction to Black Veil Brides

“Black Veil Brides” is a Roman Catholic term used for when a woman marries into the church and gives up all the pleasures of life to devote her life to God. She is then deemed a “Black Veil Bride.”

“Black Veil Brides” are also an American rock band formed in 2006 in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were inspired by, among others, bands like Kiss and Mötley Crüe, which explains their use of black makeup, body paint and tight black studded clothing. The band have released six studio albums, the most recent being 2021’s “The Phantom Tomorrow.”

Their latest release is an EP called “The Mourning.” The EPs lead single, “Saviour II,” follows “Saviour” which appeared on the 2011 album “Set The World On Fire” and was written as a letter to their fans saying how much they appreciate them and that they, and their music, will be there for them during their darkest time. Saviour II continues this message – that, as years have now gone by, they remain true to that and want to reaffirm that they are still here for people.

Saviour II by Black Veil Brides is new this week on RadiJohan.

Adam Lambert’s (not so) Ordinary World

Alongside his solo career Adam Lambert has been collaborating with rock band Queen as lead vocalist for “Queen + Adam Lambert” since 2011.

Don McLean’s American Pie Goes Gold

On 3 January 1972 Don McLean received a Gold record for his song “American Pie.” Recorded and released in 1971 on the album of the same name, the single was number 1 in the USA for four weeks in 1972. The song also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand while, in the UK, it reached number 2. American Pie’s repeated phrase “the day the music died” refers to a plane crash in 1959 that killed rock and roll stars Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. In 1991 Don McLean, a man with an evident sense of humour, was quoted saying:

“So when people ask me what American Pie means, I tell them it means I don’t ever have to work again if I don’t want to.”
