New from Shania

Shania Twain has released the first single from her forthcoming sixth studio album. It is her first release in five years since her 2017 album, Now, which peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Top 200 and on the Top Country Albums Chart. The new album will be released next year. Shania’s new single, Waking Up Dreaming, is new this week on RadiJohan.

Driver’s Seat

Driver’s Seat is a song by British band “Sniff ‘n’ the Tears” that appears on their 1978 debut album Fickle Heart. The song, which is not really about the joys of driving, was a moderate hit in a number of countries. It is about the fragmented and conflicting emotions that occur after the end of a relationship. The band is considered a one-hit wonder as Driver’s Seat was their only hit, except in the Netherlands where they had a second Top 40 single. A 12 inch version was released on A Best Of Sniff ‘n’ the Tears in 1991. The song appeared at number 1 on the Dutch Top 40 that same year as a result of its use in a “Pioneer” commercial.

The Night Flight Orchestra

“The Night Flight Orchestra” is a Swedish Rock band formed in 2007. Their goal has been to reclaim the 70’s and early 80’s sense for classic melody. They have released six studio albums to date. The Night Flight Orchestra’s latest release is the single Black Stars and Diamonds which is new this week on RadiJohan.

Happy birthday to….. Sting

Born on the 2nd of October 1951 Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner is the son of a milkman. In his young years Gordon helped his father with the milk deliveries. After leaving school in 1969, spending one term at the University of Warwick, working as a bus conductor, building labourer and tax officer, he went and got a teaching qualification. He earned a nickname when a fellow musician thought he “looked like a wasp” in his yellow-and-black striped sweater. “Sting” was working as a schoolteacher when his band “The Police” hit the big time.

A Welsh First

Total Eclipse Of The Heart, written and produced by Jim Steinman, hit number 1 in the United States this week in 1983, making Bonnie Tyler the first Welsh singer to top the chart there. The song also went to the top of the charts in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Norway, Canada and the United Kingdom and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Stop The Madness

“Hydra” is a new melodic rock band from Sweden. In August they released their debut album Point Break. Their first single, an arguably timely anti war song called Stop The Madness, is new this week on RadiJohan.

The Bacon Brothers

Michael and Kevin Bacon are the Bacon Brothers, an American Duo who have played music together since they were boys. Since 1995 they’ve been releasing music as a band. And yes, Kevin Bacon is the actor who starred in movies such as Footloose, A Few Good Men and Apollo 13. Michael, a singer-songwriter and film score composer, is Kevin’s older brother. Their latest release is the five song EP “Erato” and one of the songs, Dark Chocolate Eyes, is new this week on RadiJohan.

The Les Humphries Singers

Apparently inspired by The Edwin Hawkins Singers the English-born Les Humphries formed “The Les Humphries Singers” in Hamburg, Germany, in 1969. The group consisted of a large number of singers (at times more than twenty) of diverse ethnic origin. Members included John Lawton who would go on to be the lead singer for Uriah Heep and Liz Mitchell who would later front Boney M. The Les Humphries Singers performed a mix of  Rhythm and Blues, Gospel, and Disco. They enjoyed most of their success, including number one hits, in Europe with songs like We Are Going Down Jordan, To My Father’s House and Mama Loo. One of their best known worldwide hits is 1972’s Mexico, which was based on the 1957 Country hit “The Battle of New Orleans.”
