The song was originally called \u2018<em>Once I Had a Love<\/em>\u2019 and was inspired by The Hues Corporation&#8217;s  disco hit, <em>Rock the Boat<\/em>. A 12-inch single  version of &#8220;Heart of Glass&#8221; was first released in December 1978.\u00a0Some radio stations in the United States were reluctant to play the song because of the &#8220;pain in the ass&#8221; lyric, so an edited 7-inch single was released in January 1979.\u00a0The original album version was released as a single in the UK where the\u00a0BBC bleeped\u00a0out the word &#8220;ass&#8221;. Lead singer Debbie Harry told\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <em>&#8220;At first, the song kept saying: &#8216;Once I had a love, it was a gas. Soon turned out, it was a pain in the ass.&#8217; We couldn&#8217;t keep saying that, so we came up with: &#8216;Soon turned out, had a heart of glass.&#8217; We kept one &#8216;pain in the ass&#8217; in \u2013 and the BBC bleeped it out for radio.&#8221; <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Heart of Glass was a mega hit around the world and, apart from topping the chart in the UK, also made number 1 in the USA, New Zealand, Canada, Switzerland and West-Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blondie - Heart Of Glass\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WGU_4-5RaxU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week in 1979 &#8220;Blondie&#8221; topped the singles chart in the UK with Heart of Glass.
